3 Reasons Why You Should Consider Using a Brushless Motor for Your Remote-Control Plane

by Andrea Ortiz

There are many different types of motors for your remote-controlled plane. One of the more common types of motors is the brushed motor, which uses brushes to come in contact with the commutator, switching its polarity and allowing it to continue to move by being attracted to one magnet on one side, and then another magnet on another side. The problem with this type of motor is that it wears out quickly because the brushes and the commutator are in almost constant contact. This will require you to purchase a new motor on a regular basis. A second problem is that, when the commutator and the brushes touch each other, it causes friction which slows down the motor, reducing its rotations per minute and therefore its overall efficiency.

One way to avoid these problems is to purchase a brushless motor. Here are some reasons why switching to a brushless motor today can improve your plane's performance.

1. More Durable

Brushless motors rely on the magnets themselves moving from one area to another, rather than the polarity of the commutator being switched by using brushes. This still forces the commutator to move around. However, the equipment that allows the magnet to switch positions does not wear out as quickly as the brushes because it is made out of more durable materials. This means that you will not have to pay to replace a brushless motor in your plane as often.

2. More Rotations Per Minute

A second advantage is that, without the friction, it is easier for a brushless motor to achieve more rotations per minute. The number of rotations per minute determines how efficient the motor is and is a good judge of how long the motor will be able to run on a single set of batteries. If you don't want to spend tons of money on batteries but still get the flight times and speeds that you need, consider using a brushless motor.

3. Less Cleaning

Finally, in order for a brushed motor to function correctly, the brushes and commutator need to be cleaned on a regular basis because otherwise the motor will wear down even faster. With a brushless motor, you don't have to worry about this task because there is nothing to clean. This allows you to spend more time flying your plane and less time maintaining it.
